Experiential Exercises for Connecting to our Inner Self
1) Present) BE IN THE MOMENT.
Say the sentence "What I am experiencing at this moment is ________________" Whenever possible, write it down.
2) Practice Introspecting
Find a quiet place and set aside 10 quiet minutes each day. Relax and focus inward. Say to yourself "What am I experiencing right now?"
Be aware of your experience. You may want to tape record the session. Find out what is happening inside you. Do you notice emotions, physical body sensations. You can write them down and compare each session with the others. The goal is to become more conscious of what experiences are happening in the moment.
Share your in-the-moment internal experience with another person at least once a day. Their response is unimportant right now. Get good at knowing who you are from moment to moment and share it for your own sake, not for others' sake.
3) Attend to yourself.
As you discover your in-the-moment experience, sit with it and focus on it. Just observe it. See if it changes, gets larger or smaller, or disappears. I suggest you tape or write down what you discover. Meditation, Tai Chi, Aikido, Yoga are some of other mediums through which you can learn and practice attending to yourself.
4) Mindfulness
Whenever you find yourself slipping into a disconnection, set an intention to re-establish that connection. As soon as you are able, find space and time to focus in, accept the internal experience, and allow yourself permission to be in contact with your higher-self. Stay accepting to all your experience until you move to a place of well-being, peace, love, etc.
