Movies as Therapeutic Intervention
"Groundhog Day"

Instructor: Don Hadlock, LMFT

Welcome to the class.

A therapeutic story
I was working with a client who was having trouble with his purpose in life. He had already achieved a high position in the computer industry and felt that he was quite successful. Yet he had this empty feeling that he could not explain. He talked about wanting more from his life, and at one point I invited him to see the movie "Groundhog Day." He was a little taken aback from that and still agreed to watch it. On our next session he was full of excitement. He told me that this was the perfect movie for him to see at this time in his life. He told me that what he got from this movie was that the only real purpose in life is to live it authentically, and sometimes the only way to find out what that was was to screw it up a lot of times. He said his new purpose was to discover his authenticity and to live by that.
